MACCABI SCORES PROMOTION (JLife June 2007)
Leeds Maccabi Seniors has won promotion to Division 2 of the Leeds Combination League by finishing second to Chapeltown Brazil.
After a slow start to what culminated into a great season for Maccabi, the club beat East Leeds 3-2 on the final day .To celebrate their triumph, the team, along with manager Howard Moss, boarded an open-top bus that drove through
Alwoodley & Headingley before stopping in Leeds centre for a celebratory meal.
Howard took over from Jeremy Conn at the end of last season and began
preparation “Early season we were losing points where we shouldn’t but we managed to turn it around with a 10 game unbeaten run following an injury time win which boosted the team’s spirit” says Howard. “Being a Jewish team, we have only a small community to choose from compared to non-Jewish clubs which makes this achievement all the more
outstanding. The younger players showed us their commitment, with some making the trip to and from university each week!”
Howard is confident the young team can go onward and upward and is interested in hearing from Jewish players for next season.
The team will be playing at a new ground which has been agreed for the next five years, a deal has been with Leeds Police Sports and Social Club on Gledhow Lane in Leeds 8.
TEAM SCORE A FANTASTIC SPONSORSHIP DEAL (JLife March 2007)
Leeds Jewish community of all ages came together recently through Leeds Maccabi and Leslie Silver, former chairman of Leeds United, on behalf of Donisthorpe in an amazing unprecedented sponsorship deal worth £8,000.
The sponsorship is to cover the financing of strips, track suits and equipment for each of Maccabi’s 8 teams, which includes U10s through to the very successful senior team run by Howard Moss and Steve Feldman.
Stephen Berson, Manager of Maccabi U14s said: “It’s a great deal for both parties, Donisthorpe are hoping to raise their profile within the youth, and the future of the community, and this is a fantastic opportunity for them to do it with Maccabi. All our teams can now be united with one sponsor and afford the equipment they need, we’d like to thank them and look forward to the association.”
The strips will be white and blue, and will allow current blue strips to be passed down to the next team as change strips. Maccabi is applying for charter standard and are hoping to build their own facilities in coming years. Currently the 7 a side teams play at Brodetsky School, whilst 11 a side teams play at the Roundhay Park and Bedquilts in Adel which is not ideal.
Maccabi has the most teams playing in the Harrogate Junior League despite the tiny pool of children to choose from, and still remains 100% Jewish. Its Shabbat and award weekend is planned for May, and the annual gentlemans dinner will take place again in September.
